Holiday Food Waste

Reducing Holiday Food Waste

According to Stop Food Waste Day, the average American family wastes $1,866 on food each year. Those funds could help with bills, go towards a vacation, or allow for more giving this holiday season. As a time of year often recognized with indulgence, we’re sharing some tips to help you indulge in the things that matter: time with family and friends and delicious food for everyone to enjoy – not waste.

STEP 1: HAVE A PLAN
You’ll plan your menu, shopping list, playlist and guest list; but will you have a plan for inevitable leftovers? First, try not to over produce; very rarely do we run out of food at a party. Make sure you have adequate storage space in your refrigerator and freezer and have enough food storage containers.

THE DAY AFTER: Plan a meal within the next day or two around these leftovers. Can you top a salad, build a wrap or bowl or toss everything into an omelet? Get creative and don’t complicate it. Traveling the next day? Research your local food bank to drop leftovers off after the party.

STEP 2: SPREAD THE LOVE
Parties mean people; include everyone in the process! Communicate your plan and set expectations - guests will be happy to participate.

BEFORE THE HOLIDAY: When they ask, tell guests what to bring: be specific and keep track. This will prevent six crudité platters on the buffet or your famous bean dip being outshined by a a similar option. Also, invite your guests to bring a container with them, or have containers ready to send everyone home with leftovers.

AFTER THE HOLIDAY: Host a neighborhood (or work) Leftover Pot Luck Party. Have everyone bring a leftover as-is or turned into a new culinary creation, perfect for sharing.
