FLIK Family Friday: Tips for Reducing Waste as a Family
We live in an era with a lot of...stuff...and a lot of waste. But there are a number of simple tips you can implement into your family's daily routine to help you reduce waste at home and become a little more environmentally conscious at home.
Start Small
When it comes to reducing waste at home, it can be incredibly overwhelming to try and implement every single tip at once. Start small. Skip the single-use plastic utensils in your next takeout order, swap plastic bags for snack time with reusable containers. Make these little tips part of your regular routine to kickstart this new habit at home.
Start a Home Compost
Spring is around the corner and it's the perfect time to start your own home compost. It sounds complicated, but it’s just another form of recycling! Food scraps like fruits & vegetable peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and certain tea bags can all be used in your compost pile. Read more here to get your home compost started.
Make Sustainability a Learning Opportunity
You're never too old or too young to learn about your role in producing waste, and how you can help reduce waste at home. As a family decide what gets recycled, composted, or thrown away; make it a scavenger hunt or a race to see who can recycle the most items by the end of the week. Get your little ones involved in turning off lights and faucets when you leave the room, encourage biking or walking to school when the weather is nice instead of driving for a day. The opportunities are endless.
Embrace the Recyclable
Build homemade bird feeders with empty toilet paper rolls, a little peanut butter, and some bird seed. Use those large shipping boxes to build a fort or a spaceship. Ditch the disposables in the kitchen for reusable options -- silicone baking sheets are a great swap for tinfoil or parchment, cloth napkins are easily washable over paper napkins.
Use Up the Refrigerator
Before heading to the grocery store or farmer's market for your next haul, take inventory of what's left in your refrigerator. Got some soft vegetables? Use them up in a vegetable frittata or on a homemade pizza. Enjoy "Everything But the Kitchen Sink" salads or casserole to use up leftovers!

Embrace The Freezer
Take advantage of your freezer. Store fruits, vegetables, and herbs over the summer to use all winter for hearty soups, chilis, and sauces.
