Commit to Reducing Food Waste at Home
Prior to the pandemic, we know that wasted food is the second-largest component of municipal solid waste in the U.S. And nearly one-third of the food produced globally is discarded or wasted -- sometimes even for silly things like imperfect shaped vegetables. The food wasted? It equates to over 1.3 billion tons of food.
In 2010, the USDA Economic Research Service estimates that food loss in the United States comprised 31% of the food supply at the retail and consumer levels with an estimated retail value of $162 billion.
And initial estimates show that the amount of food going to waste has only increased throughout the pandemic thanks to the opening and closing and reopening of restaurants, increased demand for groceries, and difficulties and pressures for farmers and other food producers -- it's effects have rippled across the entire supply chain.
Stockpiling and panic purchasing throughout the early days of the pandemic were a major contributor to food waste because many households often mismanage surplus food. In just the dairy industry alone the Dairy Farmers of America reported 3.7 million gallons of milk were dumped daily until June 2020, amounting to 5% of the country’s milk supply; more than 107,000 unhatched eggs were destroyed daily until June 2020.
